MY METHOD

Painting method
For portrait painting I most often use oil paint from the Rembrandt or Lefranc et Bourgeois brand. I first make a sketch drawing on a white sheet that allows me to visualize the priority shadow areas and the light areas to highlight. A grid is made on the canvas for good scaling. The drawing is done in charcoal pencil then a first coat of brown paint very diluted in turpentine is applied. Then I practice the "fat on lean" method, ie I apply the paint taken out of the tube and mixed with a little turpentine and a little linseed oil. For the dosages I trust visually. Sometimes I use "Liquin" instead which gives a shiny texture and allows faster drying. This method allows me to achieve a truly realistic art portrait. Drawing method

For the portrait drawing in dry pastel, I choose the tender "with the shield" of the Sennelier brand because it is very malleable and with high covering power. The stamps allow areas to be smoothed out without erasing and the sheet is free from fingerprints. The ideal paper for me is matt pastel or Pastelcard from the Clairfontaine brand, either white or colored in mid-tones.
I start by making a grid of the model to be reproduced and I transpose this grid by adapting to the dimensions of the sheet. Then, I make a first sketch on a sheet of simple 80g paper in the right size in black and white. Once it is finished I reproduce this portrait drawing in color this time and with colored pastels. This method and this material promote a velvety finish with a strong covering power allowing real color contrasts and real realism.
